Xubuntu and BOINC...

Please be aware that the monitor/video values shown in our examples were determined while using a modern, newer monitor that can handle the refresh rates given. If you set up the cruncher using an older monitor, these values may very well damage the monitor if you attempt to use them while the monitor is attached to the cruncher... it would be prudent to disconnect the monitor before making these changes, and to make them remotely through VNC. The video card shouldn't be adversely affected by any values given, as it simply won't display the remote window correctly if they are not within the range it can use. We can NOT be held responsible for damage to your equipment resulting from following the instructions in this HOW-TO article, under ANY circumstances. We offer this HOW-TO as a public service to people who understand fully what they are doing, and are willing to accept any risks that may be involved.

If the cruncher you set up is a very old machine, chances are the video settings might be quite limited. Any machine worth using for a dedicated cruncher will probably handle 800 x 600 screen resolution at 16-bit color depth with no problem. We've gotten an old 400MHz machine with onboard video to work fine at those settings.

The values we give in our examples are fairly typical for most newer monitors, so consider using something made within the last few years while setting up the cruncher. We set a handful of dedicated crunchers up using several different 17" CRT type monitors, all manufactured between 1998 and 2004, and one 15" monitor made in the year 2000. We had no problems with any of them using the values in our examples. However, we haven't done anything resembling extensive testing. Keep this in mind, and if possible adjust the values given to reflect those that you are sure your monitor can handle.

We're still working on the screen resolution issues with a variety of hardware and driver combinations, and we will be updating this HOW-TO if we find other/better methods of dealing with them.

We'll also be discussing the issues on our DC Team forums.
